You bought the car. Now the dealer, your neighbour and three websites are all telling you something different about the charger.
For Chinese EVs and plug-in hybrids, the right wallbox is rarely the biggest one. It is the one that matches what your car can actually accept. This guide covers the numbers that matter before you book a home EV charger installation Dubai survey.
Chinese EVs and PHEVs are now among the UAE’s fastest-growing segments
The UAE new car market had a hard first half of 2026. Overall volume fell 25.8 per cent year on year.
Chinese brands went the other way. Jetour grew 30 per cent and is now a top-five brand, while BYD entered the rankings for the first time at sixth place. The Jetour T2 even topped the entire sales chart in May.
Plug-in models are a big part of that story. The BYD Song Plus is among the country’s best-selling recently launched models.
So questions about Chinese EV charging UAE owners used to ask in forums are now mainstream. And the most common one is simple: what is the right BYD home charger Dubai villas actually need?
Onboard charger limits: why a 22 kW wallbox won’t always charge faster
Every plug-in car has an onboard charger. It converts AC power from your wall into DC power for the battery.
Its rating, the onboard charger kW figure on your spec sheet, is your speed limit at home. A bigger wallbox cannot push past it.
The BYD Seal charger question shows this well. In some markets the Seal’s onboard charger tops out at 7 kW on single-phase, so even a 22-kW AC outlet delivers only 7 kW.
The Sealion 7 is a step up. It accepts a maximum of 7 kW on single-phase and 11 kW on three-phase. A 22-kW unit would still deliver only 11 kW.
Evolve’s own Dubai homeowner installation guide makes the same point: most EVs sold in the UAE cap at 7 kW or 11 kW on AC, and only a handful take the full 22 kW.
DC fast charging is separate. That 150-kW figure in the brochure applies to public DC stations, not your wall.
Connectors and compatibility (Type 2 / CCS2) on popular Chinese models
Here is the good news on Chinese EV charging UAE compatibility. The most common connectors in the UAE are Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC fast charging.
DEWA’s own network follows this. Its wall box charger is a 22-kW AC unit with a single Type 2 socket. Home units must match: DEWA’s technical regulations call for a Type 2 connector operating in Charging Mode 3.
Export versions of popular Chinese models are built for this standard. The Geely EX5, for example, has a CCS2 socket that takes Type 2 AC plugs as well as CCS2 DC fast chargers. So, a standard Type 2 Geely EV charger Dubai installers fit will also suit a BYD, Jetour or MG bought through an official UAE dealer.
The exception is grey imports. Some cars sold here are listed as “Chinese specs”, and those often carry China’s GB/T port.
GB/T looks similar to Type 2, but the two are not physically compatible. GB/T also uses a separate port for AC charging, so a DC adapter will not work for AC, and you need a Type 2 to GB/T adapter instead.
If your car is a Chinese-spec import, tell your installer before the survey. It changes the cable and adapter plan.
PHEVs: do you actually need a wallbox, or is a granny cable enough?
Let’s do the maths on BYD Song Plus PHEV charging.
The Song Plus DM-i carries an 18.3 kWh battery and takes about 2.7 hours to fill on a 6.6 kW AC charger. A three-pin granny cable delivers roughly 2.3 kW, so the same charge takes around 8 hours.
That fits overnight. So, on time alone, a granny cable can work for a small-battery PHEV.
Bigger PHEVs are different. The Jetour T2 i-DM pairs a 26.7 kWh battery with a 6.6 kW onboard charger, and a 43.2 kWh version also exists. On a granny cable, that is 12 to 19 hours.
Then there is safety. Mode 1 and Mode 2 cables used with extension cords are restricted in Dubai on safety grounds, and the three-pin cable is meant for emergencies, not nightly use.
A PHEV only saves money if you plug it in every day. Home electricity costs roughly 29 to 44 fils per kWh, so a full Song Plus charge works out at about AED 5 to 8.
Our view: 7-kW PHEV home charger UAE owners can schedule and monitor is the sensible choice. Anything larger is wasted on a PHEV.
Sizing the right charger for your model, parking and DEWA supply
Good sizing for a home EV charger installation Dubai job comes down to three checks.
- Your car. Find the onboard charger kW figure on your UAE spec sheet. Specs vary by market and trim.
- Your supply. Single-phase supports up to 7 kW. Anything faster needs three phases.
- You’re parking. The distance from your distribution board drives the cable run, and cable is often the largest line item in a quote.
DEWA also sets an upper limit. Output is capped at 32 A per phase and 22 kVA per charge point.
Model | Type | Battery | Max AC the car accepts | Right-size wallbox | Approx. full charge |
BYD Song Plus DM-i | PHEV | 18.3 kWh | 6.6 kW | 7 kW | About 2.7 hours |
Geely Starray EM-i | PHEV | 18.4 kWh | 6.6 kW | 7 kW | About 3 hours |
Jetour T2 i-DM | PHEV | 26.7 to 43.2 kWh | 6.6 kW | 7 kW | About 4 to 7 hours |
Geely EX5 | EV | 60.22 kWh | 7 kW (1-phase) / 11 kW (3-phase) | 7 or 11 kW | About 5.5 to 9 hours |
BYD Sealion 7 | EV | Varies by trim | 7 kW (1-phase) / 11 kW (3-phase) | 7 or 11 kW | Overnight |
BYD Seal | EV | Varies by trim | 7 kW in some markets | 7 kW, or 11 kW if your trim supports it | Overnight |
Remember the overnight window too. A 7-kW unit adds roughly 350 to 400 km in ten hours of parking.

Using dealer-supplied chargers vs universal smart chargers
Many dealers bundle a wallbox. Jetour offered early T2 i-DM buyers in Malaysia a free AC wallbox with installation, and BYD sells its own AC charger in 7 kW and 11 kW versions with a Type 2 cable in some markets.
A dealer-supplied BYD home charger Dubai owners receive is usually fine for one car. Ask two questions first.
Who installs it? The work must be done through a DEWA-enrolled contractor, whoever supplied the box.
What can it do? Many bundled units are basic. A smart unit adds scheduling, energy tracking, load balancing and access control.
Load balancing matters most in Dubai. It throttles the charger when your AC compressors and everything else spike together.
A universal Type 2 unit is also brand-neutral. The same wallbox works as a Geely EV charger Dubai households use today and for whatever replaces it later. Evolve explains more in its guides to smart EV charger features and why OCPP matters.
How Evolve installs chargers for BYD, Geely, Jetour, MG and more
Evolve’s process starts with the car, not the catalogue.
The team inspects your parking area, electrical access, available capacity and cable routing. It then recommends a charger based on your vehicle, daily distance, power supply, parking layout and future plans.
That matters for Chinese models, where specs differ by trim and import route. A 7-kW PHEV home charger UAE setup for a Song Plus is a different job from an 11 kW three-phase unit for an EX5.
Evolve’s recommended villa unit supports up to 22 kW AC on three-phase, with a lower-power configuration for single-phase homes, Type 2 compatibility and built-in load balancing.
Every home EV charger installation Dubai project ends with testing, handover and ongoing maintenance support. Costs generally land between AED 2,000 and AED 9,000 all in.

FAQs
A Type 2 smart wallbox matched to your model. BYD PHEVs like the Song Plus need 7 kW. For a BYD Seal charger or Sealion 7 setup, choose 7 kW on single-phase or 11 kW on three-phase, if your trim supports it. The right BYD home charger Dubai villas need is rarely 22 kW.
Yes. Most Chinese PHEVs accept 6.6 kW on AC, so 7-kW PHEV home charger UAE drivers install already delivers full speed. A Song Plus fills in under three hours.
Yes, if both use Type 2, which UAE-market cars do. If a Tesla is likely, consider an 11 kW three-phase unit, since current Model 3 and Model Y cars accept 11 kW on AC. Evolve's Tesla charging guide covers this, and a universal unit keeps your home EV charger installation Dubai investment useful across brands.
